About this Holiday
Bonifacio Day, observed on November 30th, commemorates the birthday of Andres Bonifacio (born 1863), the 'Father of the Philippine Revolution' and founder of the Katipunan (Kataastaasang Kagalanggalang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan), the secret revolutionary society that launched the armed struggle against Spanish colonial rule in 1896. Bonifacio, born to a poor family in Tondo, Manila, is revered as a symbol of the Filipino working class and grassroots patriotism. He was captured and executed in 1897 amid political rivalries, but his legacy as a champion of the people endures as one of the most powerful in Philippine history.
