Children's Day

Public holiday honoring children's happiness and well-being, celebrated on May 5 in Japan and Korea, and April 4 in Taiwan

About this Holiday

Children's Day is a public holiday celebrated across East Asia honoring the happiness, well-being, and rights of children. In Japan, it falls on May 5th as part of Golden Week and coincides with the ancient Boys' Festival (Tango no Sekku), with colorful koi-nobori carp streamers and samurai doll displays. South Korea observes Children's Day on May 5th, founded by children's rights activist Bang Jeong-hwan in 1922. Taiwan celebrates on April 4th, often creating a spring holiday break alongside the Ching Ming Festival.
