About this Holiday
Chung Yeung Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. According to legend, Huan Jing was instructed by a Taoist master to take his family to a high place to escape a plague — a tradition that evolved into the custom of climbing hills and enjoying autumn scenery. Like Ching Ming Festival in spring, Chung Yeung is also a time for visiting ancestral graves, with families cleaning tombs and offering incense and paper offerings. Hong Kong's many hiking trails and viewpoints are especially popular during this festival, with spectacular autumn views of the harbour and surrounding hills.
