About this Holiday
Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, when India officially became a sovereign, democratic republic, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document. The day is celebrated with a grand parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, featuring military displays, cultural tableaux from all states, and an aerial fly-past. The ceremony is presided over by the President of India and broadcast live nationwide.
