About this Holiday
Taiwan Retrocession Day, observed on October 25th, commemorates the formal transfer of Taiwan from Japanese to the Republic of China government on October 25, 1945, following Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. Japan had governed Taiwan for 50 years following the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895). After being removed from the official holiday calendar, Retrocession Day was reinstated as a statutory public holiday in Taiwan starting from 2026, marking a pivotal moment in Taiwan's modern history.
