About this Holiday
Songkran Festival, celebrated from April 13-15 each year, marks the traditional Thai New Year based on the solar calendar. The festival is famous for its nationwide water-splashing celebrations, symbolizing the washing away of misfortune and welcoming of the new year with purification. Traditional activities include building sand pagodas at temples, releasing fish and birds, paying respects to elders by pouring scented water over their hands, and merit-making at Buddhist temples.
