About this Holiday
National Day on October 1st commemorates the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, when Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the new state at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. As a Special Administrative Region of the PRC, Hong Kong observes National Day as a public holiday. The day is marked by a flag-raising ceremony, official government celebrations, and fireworks over Victoria Harbour in the evening, alongside HKSAR Establishment Day celebrations earlier in the year.
