About this Holiday
Sports Day (Supōtsu no Hi), formerly Health and Sports Day (体育の日), celebrates the importance of physical activity and a healthy mind and body. The holiday was originally established to commemorate the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, which opened on October 10, and falls on the second Monday of October. It is celebrated with athletic events, marathons, and community sports competitions nationwide. The holiday was renamed Sports Day in 2020 to coincide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
